Choosing the right plate for the job
Not every flexo job needs the same plate characteristics. A label with fine type, a solid packaging panel and a short run with tight registration can all call for different plate choices, even when the artwork comes from the same customer. The right plate starts with the substrate, the press setup and the level of detail in the artwork.
At our Midrand base, we work with label and packaging printers who need practical advice before plates are made. That includes checking line weight, reverses, trap, dot gain risk and any text that may close up on press. Good plate selection helps reduce waste, especially when production is running around load-shedding schedules or a busy courier cut-off.
Fine detail options for labels and small type
When the work carries small text, barcode areas or fine line artwork, the plate needs to hold clean edges and controlled highlight detail. This is often important for labels, shrink sleeves and other jobs where small marks can become difficult to read if the plate is not suited to the image.
- Cleaner reproduction for light type and narrow rules
- Better support for small brand marks and technical copy
- Useful where consistency matters across repeat label runs
We also look at proof comparison and artwork preflight before production begins. That helps catch issues such as weak reverse text, missing bleed or elements that may need adjustment before the plate is made.
Plates for solids, tints and packaging boards
Packaging jobs often rely on larger solids, smoother tints and stronger coverage on board or film. These jobs can behave differently on press depending on ink, anilox selection and the surface being printed. A plate that suits a detailed label may not be the best choice for a carton panel or a heavy coverage package repeat.
For these applications, plate choice is guided by the press condition and the finish the printer wants to achieve. We can support imposition planning, screening support and technical job advice so the final plate layout suits the pressroom and the job ticket.
- Suitable for cartons, wraps and other packaging work
- Useful where smooth ink laydown is important
- Helps balance solids with readable smaller elements
Remakes, repeat jobs and version control
Repeat work needs careful handling because even a small artwork revision can affect plate fit, trim, mounting or image position. That is why remake support and plate labelling matter. Clear identification helps printers keep versions apart, especially when different SKUs or seasonal changes move through the same pressroom.
We also manage plate trimming, dispatch packing and collection coordination so finished plates are easier to handle on site. In a busy production environment, practical packing and clear labels can save time when plates are moving between prepress, mounting and press.
Working with local print conditions
South African printers often deal with varied conditions, from coastal humidity in Durban to dry inland weather in Gauteng. Pressrooms may also be working around municipal power interruptions, limited night shifts or transport delays between the warehouse and the customer. These realities affect how a plate job is planned and delivered.
Because we are based in Midrand, we can support printers in Johannesburg, Pretoria, the East Rand and West Rand as well as courier delivery to Cape Town, Gqeberha and Durban. The aim is to keep the order practical from start to finish, whether it is a quick collection or a packed dispatch.
How to use this hub page
This page is a guide to the plate options available for different print requirements, image styles and press conditions. The listing cards that follow on the site are there to help you compare the choices at a glance, while this hub gives the context behind each option.
If you are unsure which route suits your job, send the artwork through the enquiry form on our contact page. Sibusiso Mthembu and the team can review the file, check the likely plate needs and advise on the most suitable approach for the work in hand.
